Poverty in Canada

Wed, 03 Oct 2007 12:45:00

According to Forbes, less than 800 individuals are worth almost $3 trillion U.S. dollars! This is clear indication that there is absolutely no shortage of resources in this world to take care of the most vulnerable. Canada, a first-world state, has 17 billionaires. According to the Canadian Council on Social Development, the richest 10% in Canada had their incomes increase by 14% and the bottom 10% income increased by less than 1%. There is an increasing polarization of income in Canada. More and more people cannot afford to house themselves and their families adequately as well as feed themselves.

Hunger in Canada is a reality.  According to Hunger Count 2005, a publication of the Canadian Association of Food Banks, food bank use in Canada has increased by 118% since 1989.  52% of food bank recipients were receiving welfare, the working poor using food banks comprised 13.1% of food bank recipients and the third largest group of food bank recipients was people with disabilities.  Children, those under age 18, are 40% of food bank clients.  It is clear that social assistance rates are extremely inadequate for people to live that is to secure decent affordable housing, and then access healthy food.  Among the world’s richest countries, Canada has one of the highest rates of child poverty, 15%, and these rates have not improved at all in the last 15 years.  Shame on the capitalists.  These stinking, disgusting fat pigs live in luxury while millions of people go hungry.  This is capitalism at its finest.
