Lovers in a Dangerous Time: No striking for Magna Autoworkers who Join CAW

Against Wage Labour

Wed, 17 Oct 2007 13:34:00

October 16, 2007 - No shame for the Canadian Auto Workers: As pictured below, there is no hiding the fact that the union is best friends with the capitalists.

RICHARD LAUTENS / TORONTO STAR Magna chair Frank Stronach, left, and CAW president Buzz Hargrove shake on `Framework of Fairness’

The union wants more members; Magna wants more money and through a new deal “Framework of Fairness” - between the CAW and Magna International, employees who become members of the CAW no longer have the fundamental right to strike, an act which further erodes any worker rights that remain after years of concessions by autoworker unions.  The workers’ power is in their labour force.  Without the ability to threaten to take away their power workers will be further exploited more openly by the corporations and the bosses.  Magna based out of Aurora Ontario is an automotive supplier which at the end of 2006 had a Total Sales figure of 24.2 billion U.S. dollars.  Magna has operations around the world including many in the United States and Europe, as well as China, Mexico, India, Korea, and South Africa.  The CAW currently has a membership of over 265,000 workers.  These two giants have a lot to smile about.  Buzz gets more members in a time when the North American auto industry is showing signs of slow self-destruction, and Frank is trying to keep workers satisfied with the benefits that the union offers and at the same time he and the executives at Magna, are protected against workers using their legal right to strike.  One thing is clear here – finally the union is showing its true colours in full light, that is, no more pretending that they actually care about the workers.
