New Case Made Against Mahmoud Salehi in order to keep him in Jail

Today, March 17, 2008, Mahmoud Salehi was taken from Sanandaj, Iran prison to the Ministry of Justice in order for them to lay new charges and to issue him provisional jail time.

The plaintiff in this new case is the office of Intelligence Services, and the subject of the grievance is apparently within the contents of messages and letters that Mahmoud was sending from within the jail to the outside.  In so doing, on March 2008, his one-year sentence will be completed (March 23rd, 2008) and according to law he must be released.  This newly made case against him and the issuing of additional interim jail time is merely a way to keep him imprisoned.  This is especially obvious, when noting the contents of the messages and letters that Mahmoud was sending; they were his gratitude for the support that he was receiving from organizations, and worker-activists both within and outside of Iran; and also he was announcing his solidarity with the worker struggles, university students and women activists as well as condemning capitalism.  These are the basic and inalienable rights of every worker-activist and nobody can be arrested for such actions.

We declare this new case against Mahmoud as a clear oppression and aggravation of Mahmoud Salehi’s rights and so alongside this injustice against him, he is going on a hunger strike.  Keeping him in jail is nothing but a gradual death for him.  Mahmoud Salehi must be released as soon as possible.  The immediate responsibility of any devastating event for him resides with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
